Traditional hard drives or HDD (hard disk drive) have been with us for many years but, lately, another type of storage technology is winning the battle, solid state drives (SSD or solid state drive).

Today we have all heard about SSDs and their advantages over “traditional” hard drives : faster loading of applications and the operating system, less boot time and shutdown, and even better autonomy . We are going to see how to correctly change an HD disk for an SSD to give new life to our computer. But, first, let’s see its main differences.

Hard disk vs. SSD

The well-known hard drives are data storage devices that use a magnetic recording system to store files, composed of one or more plates (hard drives) .

The SSD disk, on the other hand, uses flash memory and does not carry mechanical parts but several chips, which has two basic advantages: faster access to data and greater resistance to shocks.

In terms of capabilities, the HDD has reached 2 TB, although the most widespread size is 500 MB. SSDs, on the other hand, tend to be somewhat more expensive (although their prices have dropped a lot), with 256 MB as the most used. However, the advantages noted above tip the balance to the SSD clearly .

The choice of what type of SSD depends on several points to consider: the type of computer where we will install it, capacity, computer connections, etc.

A disk for the laptop is not the same as for the desktop computer. In this second case we could install the SSD as a disk for the operating system and leave the old HDD as the second disk for data. Normally we will not have this option on a laptop (although there are models that do allow it).

On the other hand is the detail of the capacity: depending on the operating system, we might need more or less memory . For example, for a good use of Windows 10 we recommend a disk of 250 GB or more.

Finally we have to take into account if the disk that we are going to buy comes with a case to install it or we will have to buy an additional installation kit . As a general rule, all current SSDs come with this kit, although it does not hurt to make sure.

Installing the disk

We have already chosen the disk. If it does not come prepared, we’ll just have to mount it in the box that comes in the kit. Once ready, we will connect it to the computer and, depending on the use we are going to give it, we have two options:

  • If we use it as a single disk we will have to clone the old HDD disk if we want to keep everything as it was. For this, obviously, we will need an SSD of a capacity equal to or greater than the HDD that we are going to replace.
  • If we are going to use it as a secondary disk, we will only have to connect it and move the files.

SSD as a single disk

We connect the disk to the computer and use a program to clone the content , such as AOMEI Backupper , for example. It is simple and intuitive to use and will guide us step by step. There are many options such as Macrium Reflect Free or GParted , among others.

Once the process is over, which will last a long time depending on the size of the disk, we can proceed to the physical installation .

SSD hard disk as auxiliary or system disk

Some laptops come with two hard drives: one SSD for the operating system and another physical one for data and programs . We gain speed in the initial load and in the start of the computer. We can do the same, if our computer has a place for it, a desktop will not give us a problem because it usually has several bays for several discs.

In the case that we want to use the new SSD disk as a system disk , where we only install the OS of our computer, we will only have to connect it to it. Once our computer has recognized the disk and it works without problems (not yet formatted), we turn off the computer.

To install the operating system on the new disk , we must start the computer to recognize our original unit of that program (either on CD or USB) and follow the instructions.

Then we would proceed to the installation of the operating system as we have said before.

Once all the software is correctly installed, we will check the huge difference in performance and speed with the previous physical disk (which, by the way, we can continue to use as an external disk just by buying a box ).

The ideal is to use the SSD for the programs that we will use the most and the most quickly, the operating system, games, etc. We will give new life to our computer in a simple and economical way.

What is Intel Optane and how will it improve the speed of my computer?

There is no doubt that the SSD units have been a complete computer revolution, perhaps the largest since the arrival of 3D graphics cards. Even the oldest computer seems to fly when it receives one, but they are not without problems. From the start, they are quite expensive if we look at the € / GB ratio. Much more than the very slow conventional hard drives, very cheap and high capacity, but with very low performance.

An intermediate option is the hybrid hard drives , which have not enjoyed great popularity. And between one and the other comes a new technology: Optane. This is the name given to XPoint 3D memory units developed by Intel, which basically put the turbo so that a computer with a classic hard drive sometimes runs as if it had an SSD. It sounds impossible, but it is not.

 

How does Optane work?

The Optane units make use of a special type of memory developed by Intel and chip manufacturer Micron. It receives the name 3D Xpoint and combines broadly the very small latency of RAM with the persistence (ability to store information after turning off the PC) of an SSD. Put another way, try to imagine something like a tiny hard drive that can access the files inside it as quickly as if they were already housed in RAM.

Optane units, in fact, can be used as if they were huge banks of RAM with persistence in professional systems. For the consumer, which is more interesting to us, they speed up the operation of hard disks by creating a high-speed buffer. They have much less capacity than an SSD , but that’s because the bulk of the files are stored on the hard drive.

 

The idea is that the documents and files of most frequent use are stored in the Optane unit , much faster than a normal hard disk, so that the computer goes to it and only “calls” the hard disk when it needs to access data outside of this unit.

Intel resembles the operation of a PC with a conventional hard drive to that of a kitchen with the pantry in another room. Every time the computer needs an ingredient to prepare a recipe, it has to leave the kitchen to pick it up. Optane memory acts like a conveyor belt that brings the ingredients to the computer at full speed so you do not waste time going in and out.

The benefits of an SSD without having an SSD

While there were already similar solutions using pendrives and cache spaces on the hard drive itself, none of them offers the speed of Xpoint 3D memory. In addition, its latency is incredibly low, so it allows to maintain a constant flow of files very, very fast even if the transfer speed of an Optane unit is not greater than that of an SSD in nominal terms.

The interesting thing about Optane units is that they are much cheaper than a high performance SSD but they offer some of its advantages. The fact is that most of the files consulted by the user and by Windows are usually almost the same, so by simply moving them to an Optane unit we are already getting part of the benefits of having an SSD.

One point in favor of Optane units is, as we said, their latency. The time it takes an SSD drive to access a file is measured in microseconds, while in an Optane it is nanosecond. This allows you to send relatively small files at enormous speed and very consistently.

In addition to all this, the Optane units are economical. Because they are basically very small. Currently they are offered in modules of 16 and 32 GB, which may seem very small, but they are enough for the PC to host the files and frequently used applications. With only a fraction of the capacity of an SSD disk, it already speeds up access to data that would otherwise have to be read from a large but very slow hard drive.

Why can Optane be a convenient option?

The characteristics of Optane are quite unique. They are units too small to store large applications exclusively inside and essentially serve as a complement to the hard drive. So they are not comparable to an SSD. However, they can be interesting for users who need to store large amounts of data but only regularly access a few.

Intel, in fact, has launched the first Optans thinking a lot about the players . Many of them have huge amounts of games, so an SSD is very short and they use hard drives of 3 TB and more. The result is very slow loading times. By adding an Optane unit you can accelerate access to the load data without installing an expensive SSD.

The low latency of Optane units can also be very useful for people who work with large databases at a professional level. And above all, for all that domestic user with a computer equipped with a conventional hard drive and who does not want to add another unit , since Optane memories are “invisible” facing the desktop. They just accelerate the system and do not come into view.

As a general recommendation, a 16 GB module should be sufficient for the average user who wants to accelerate their hard drive without changing it for an SSD. Those of 32 GB are reserved for high performance teams and very demanding players.

How can I install an Optane unit on my computer?

 

Not all computers can benefit from the possibilities of Optane units. Only those computers equipped with an Intel Core i3 or higher seventh generation or more modern processor can use them, assuming they have an M.2 slot. It is also necessary to use Windows 10.

To install an Optane memory you just have to insert it into the corresponding slot and start the PC. Depending on the age of the equipment it may be necessary to update the motherboard. Once Windows is booted, the system will detect its presence and you can proceed to activate the hardware. The new drive will not be visible on your PC, so it’s not like you’re installing a new hard drive or an SSD.

Given their characteristics, many computer manufacturers use Optane units as a complement to a high-capacity hard disk in both general-purpose and gaming equipment . If the code is open, it is easy to make sure that it is doing what it is supposed to do. This is a positive point. Now this code will be installed in a voting machine. It is also necessary that the design of this voting machine is open.

We must go one step further in the definition of the voting machine. It must use free software and its hardware design must be open. By this statement we are already beginning to touch the limits . But however, it exists, there is for example the OpenRISC 1000 a processor with free specifications.

How are we going to guarantee that the voting machines built according to these specifications will comply with them? Who will be responsible for this certification? Then admitting that this point is also raised, it will be necessary to ensure that the machine delivered to the voting point is the one that has been checked and that it has not undergone any alteration.

Then comes the moment to enter the machine to vote the data about the voting point: the list of voters, candidates. It will be necessary to find a solution so that this operation does not allow to introduce falsified data or any other program likely to modify the official program.

All this seems very complicated to replace a simple urn and avoid the chore of stripping. This manual procedure is not flawless either. But his control is accessible to anyone and not just computer scientists.

Richard Stallman had declared himself opposed to the principle of voting machines, whether free or not:

Democracy is too important to take preventable risks. If a digital voice counting system seems sound, it would take twenty years of experience to trust it.

All this to show that in this case , the transparency of open source does not necessarily solve all the problems. Of course it looks better than a proprietary voting machine. But in this case it only changes little in the end. The question is rather: do we really need a voting machine?
