Here we conclude, this article. Remember that using the menu of this website or visiting the main page, you can compare several solutions to request financing from home.

How Your Computer Can Be Infected – Volume 3: Trojan horses, rootkits and backdoors

The last part of our ministry about possible infections of computers and other similar devices is devoted to three types of malware, namely malicious software that does not belong to viruses. This time, Avast’s computer security experts will help us explain this.

While the viruses and worms primarily capture their ability to copy and propagate, the power of the rootkits and backdoors lies in their secrecy. They are fascinated by hiding in the infected system without the users knowing it. Each of these malicious software uses a different strategy, but you can get the same way to your computer – and here’s why we advise: Install a reliable antivirus ! Although this is not a virus itself, it will protect you from them.

Trojan Horse
Surely you know the famous Greek goddess from the times of the Trojan War, in which the Dana donated to his enemy a beautiful giant horse they hid in, and when they got through the walls, they climbed and started to kill the Trojans. The same Danish gift is a type of software called a Trojan horse – it looks like something nice and useful, it invites the user to download it, so the trustee puts it in the ramparts of the device, but then awaits unpleasant surprises such as the theft of sensitive data, , installing unwanted software, showing ads …

Often, this is spyware , a program designed to collect information about the user. They control your web browser, watch what sites you visit, force you unwanted ads, and sometimes even have a license agreement, which makes it legal if you agree to install it. For example, it could be a marketing tool for operators of sites that people do not like to visit – they are not willing to solve the damage caused, and demand compensation.

You will most likely be downloaded from the Internet. Therefore, we stress: download only from certified sources and read reviews and licensing arrangements for each program!

Another secret marauder modifies the guest operating system so that it is invisible to a normal user and therefore not easily erased. They do the same damage as if you were to leave a bad guest to your facility. In particular, it tries to conceal the routines of a malicious program and prevent its removal, for example, it can block access to it or run a refresh process that can restore the deleted rootkit again.

Backdoor means the back door in English. Backdoors create a back door to your device, allowing for unauthorized use. You will often download them together with another malicious program that installs them to keep the backdoor open and your computer is easier to find for attackers in the future.

How Your Computer Can Be Infected – Volume 2: Worms

Image result for computer virus

We recently wrote to you about what a computer bug is, this time we’ll focus on the “worm” device. In cooperation with Avast., A Czech manufacturer of antivirals and other ways of securing your devices, we have prepared another part of the series on computer and online security.

Right from the beginning, we should probably clarify what is actually the difference between the worm and the virus and what links them. Both can be classified as malware – malicious software. They both spontaneously spread, and so they get into more and more computers, tablets, smartphones … While the virus puts its copy into another program through which it is spreading, the worm itself is a program. After the boot, the virus searches for other files to enroll, increasing the chances of a home being taken. The worm dispatches your copy yourself – it can be emailed or copied to a portable USB drive. It can exploit the vulnerabilities of the target system, expand and run itself remotely. In some cases, the worm does not directly spread its copies, but only links to download itself, using a chat application (skype, facebook chat …) or SMS messages. If a user downloads and starts a file from a link, it infects their devices.

Dissemination, though having a major influence on how successful a worm is, is not its only goal. He always has some bad luck. Like a virus, it can cause the device or its part to stop working or it will work badly, unusually. Sometimes it deletes files, sometimes encrypts them, and forces us to pay for us to reuse them. In terms of banking services, the most dangerous is the worm that scans the computer and collects personal and sensitive data about its users.

How to defend yourself? Follow the 4 rules

1) Do not download and open unknown or suspicious attachments . Among the suspects are various promotional offers, chain mail attachments (usually with the promise: Send this email to 10 friends and meet your true love within a week!), Announcement of a win in the contest without any participation, and so on. Avoid attachments that contain executable programs. These include not only EXE files, but also various documents that ask users for permissions, such as to run macros.

2) Do not click on suspicious links . The same rules apply to them as for attachments.

3) Install a reliable antivirus and update it regularly. Not only will the worm help you uncover and then eliminate, but thanks to it you can completely prevent the worms.

4) Use strong passwords . A strong password is not a word traceable in the dictionary, it has more than 8 characters, lower case, digits, and special characters. We recommend reading our article Are you well protected?

We advise you to keep our advice not only when using computers but also mobile phones.

“We are currently processing approximately eighteen thousand malware samples for mobile phones per day. Of which approximately three thousand are harmful to the device and can cause unwanted behavior or financial damage, “warns Filip Chytry, security analyst at Avast.

We also recommend that you read our article 10 on the safe use of smartphone .

In conclusion, we have five of the most famous computer worms for you to better understand where it can lead when we do not regularly roast our equipment:

Mydoom – The internet appeared in 2004, in several variants. He attacked the 32-bit edition of Microsoft Windows. It was emailed and reportedly the fastest worm that has infected the highest number of machines so far. Its goal was to allow an attacker to access the Internet from an infected device, bypass authentication and system authorization to obtain sensitive data or send spam. The losses are estimated at $ 39 billion.

– The Internet began to crawl in 2008 and spread through Windows operating system errors, through shared network drives and launching portable devices such as flash drives, etc. The attacker could have infected the computer remotely, blocked system updates, including anti-virus programs, finished. Total damage is around 9 billion US dollars.

Sasser – began using bugs in Windows 2000, XP and 2003 in 2004. While most worms spread via e-mail or links, Sasser used the open ports of the computer. It caused restarting computers immediately after starting, but blocked and slowed down the data transfer, leading to stopping air traffic, disabling X-ray at Lund University Hospital, or cutting off the UK Coast Guard from Map Services. It is estimated that the losses it caused are $ 3.5 billion.

Code Red – appeared in the morning of July 19, 2001 and spread over the world over just 14 hours. It infected over 359,000 devices with the Microsoft IIS Web server. He stopped himself-his author had him programmed to stop spreading at midnight. Fortunately, infected devices may not end up in scrap, but with a slowdown in Internet connectivity, it has caused damage estimated at $ 2.6 billion.

SOBIG.F – during the month it was spread in 2003, it came to every fifteenth e-mail. He distributed all the addresses he found in his system – not just those in the directory, he searched for the content of text documents. He is estimated to have lost $ 2.5 billion during his short life.

Artificial intelligence is a computer tool like any other

Image result for artificial intelligence

As I continue my series of articles on artificial intelligence, because the subject is vast and the confusion continues. The problem is that the debate is at this moment completely polluted by philosophical reflections on the singularity and the place of the human and the machines in the universe. I have a lot of respect for philosophers … but this is clearly not the time to ask all these existential questions: there are market shares to defend, campaigns to customize, conversations to automate … and the AI can give you a helping hand.

No time to sneer, must get started!

I was last week at ADETEM for their annual day dedicated to marketing trends. As you can imagine, the day was dedicated to artificial intelligence and its applications for marketing. I tried during my speech to convey a simple message: artificial intelligence is not only a nebulous concept, it is also technological bricks that can be used to make very concrete things: visual recognition or voice, analyze large amounts of data to try to identify patterns recurring, predictions … As said very well Andrew Ng, we reached the peak of discussions, we must now take action: Andrew Ng Says Enough Papers , Let’s Build AI Now! .

It is in this context that I was able to complete the popularization speech given the previous month ( The advent of increased marketing ) with a certain number of concrete examples of what can be done with solutions doped with the AI .

As stated in this slideshow, I am convinced that despite the media hype and all the promises that can be made by the experts, the AI is a computing resource like any other, just like the databases or tools of BI Understand that the AI is a layer that is stacked on an existing to work faster or differently, but in any case to do the job in place of marketers or advertisers . Admittedly, the potential is enormous, but it will be gradually transformed as companies integrate RNs and above all will succeed in fulfilling the many conditions necessary for their proper functioning. Just like connected objects or big data, AIs will help us improve performance and discover key lessons where a human being could not see them.

Normally the video of this intervention should be published in the coming days, I add it as soon as it is available.

How to transfer photos from mobile to computer with iPhone and Android

Image result for phone to computer

Our smartphones have managed to replace the usual digital photo cameras . Their lenses, the quality of their sensors, the digital image processor, the stabilizers and all their components make these the perfect equipment to photograph everything that comes before us almost without stopping to think. Photographs that fill the memory of our smartphones little by little, until limiting their operation with other applications. A very common situation that can be solved by passing the photos of the smartphone to the computer to save them on an external hard drive, a USB memory, or where we need.

Sometimes, the most basic operations with technology are not so obvious, this in particular, depending on the system you use (Apple iOS or Android) can be more or less easy. Passing photos to the smartphone to the computer is something quick that will be very useful. We have already seen the scenario of being able to upload them to the cloud directly by synchronizing our mobile , but in this case we can have other preferences or needs, such as retouching photos in an advanced way, making a photo pass on our computer, or transferring them to a USB to take them to print. For all the cases in which we want to use the computer, we propose three different systems to do it depending on whether we have a computer is Apple, Android or Windows PC.

How to transfer photos from your smartphone to your computer

How to transfer photos from the iPhone or iPad to a Mac or PC

Although many say otherwise the functions of Apple computers are compatible with most systems, so we will find 3 different ways to transfer our photos to save or use them how and where we want:

1. Synchronizing with an application in the cloud

pasar fotos al ordenador

  • The simplest method to be able to enjoy and store all our photos where we want is to make use of any system in the cloud. Apple , Google or even Dropbox have systems that automatically synchronize our photos. In the case of Apple’s iCloud, just go to Settings> Click on our Apple ID> iCloud> Photos and activate the iCloud Photo Library.
  • In the event that we want to synchronize Dropbox, Box, Mega, OneDrive, etc … just download the application to our iPhone or iPad and open our session with our user, we will ask if we want to enable the upload of photos to your cloud. Just accept and all our photos (or those that we select), will be synchronized immediately.
  • In the case that we use Google Photos (a great alternative to the Apple cloud), we will have to wait for them to synchronize automatically after entering our user data in the application that we downloaded from the App Store.

2. Using the “Photos” application of Apple on Mac

In the event that the cloud does not convince you, or you need to physically have the files on your computer you can pass your photos to your Mac in a traditional way thanks to the Apple photos application. For this, we will need to connect our iPhone, iPad, iPod or even a camera to the Mac using, and confirm that the connected equipment is trusted.

At that time the Apple photos application will open automatically (if you did not have it open) and we can start importing the photos we want, or all of them at the same time, and even choose the destination folder to have them already localized .

3. How to transfer photos from the iPhone to a PC

In the case that you are PC users, there are two ways to pass our photos:

  • One in which we can manually synchronize our photos by connecting our iPhone or iPad with the Lightning cable. In doing so, Windows will treat our computers as if it were a physical hard drive or a USB stick. Open the My Computer folder, find the name of the computer that we just connected and look for the DCIM folder where our photos are located. Simply copy them with Control + C and paste them into the folder you want with Control + V.
  • The other system is to download and use the Microsoft Photos application, which, like Apple’s, centralizes all our image library so that we can edit and find them easily. To pass the photos of our iPhone or iPad , we connect to the PC by cable, open the Microsoft Photos application> Click on import> select our iPhone or iPad and let it finish copying all the photos we have selected.

How to transfer photos from Android to a Mac or PC

Passing our photos of an Android computer to a computer is just as easy, especially once we have decided which is the system that best suits us and we tell you below.

1. Using a cloud service

pass photos to the computer

As it happens in iOS, it is the system most used by most users, since we only need to download an application, put our user (or create it so it is the first time we use it) and let it synchronize. The most popular are Google Photos and Dropbox , which also have a desktop and web version that we can access to manage, touch up, and edit our photographs.

2. Passing our Android photos to a Mac computer

In the case that you want to pass photos from an Android Smartphone to a Mac in a manual way, you will have to download a small application called Android File Transfer . An application that after installing it on our Mac, we just have to connect via USB and browse the different folders to copy the files and / or photos that we want in the following way:

  • Open Android File Transfer if you do not do it automatically when you connect it.
  • We unlocked our Android device to allow them to connect and synchronize.
  • We connect the Android device to the Mac using its USB cable.
  • On your device, we press the ” USB to … ” notification
  • We select Transfer files .
  • On the Mac, an Android File Transfer window will open to which you can drag the files.
  • When you are finished, disconnect the USB cable.

3. Pass our Android photos to a PC

The system to pass photos of an Android device to a PC is exactly the same as in Mac, but the need to install any application in our computer, since the management of files between Android and Windows is exactly the same and compatible. So we repeat the following steps:

  • Unlock the Android device
  • We connect it to the PC through its USB cable.
  • On your device, press the ” USB to … ” notification
  • Select Transfer files.
  • On your computer, an Android File Transfer window will open to which you can drag the files.
  • When you are finished, disconnect the USB cable.

With these three different ways per device (iOS and Android), we can manage, copy and save all our photos, to do with them what we want, thus releasing the space they occupy if we store it on external hard drives or USB memories.

Computer purchase guide

Computer purchase guide

When we go to buy a computer, and we look at a model that catches our attention, we have a list of technical specifications of all kinds: processor, hard disk, RAM, graphics card … A lot of terms, acronyms and numbers maybe they will not tell us anything Which is better? What is better for me? There are many doubts that can arise when we are thinking about renewing the PC.

In Technology from you to you we want to help you with your purchase. For this, we have prepared this guide in which we will explain what are the main components of a computer , and what it is that you have to take into account. Do not forget that, if what we want is to update and improve the performance of our PC, we also offer you a guide of PC components . In addition, at the end of the guide we leave you a series of profiles so that, depending on the use that we are going to give you, we focus more on some elements than others. With this introduction, let’s start with the basics.

Main components

The heart of a computer. This component is basic and therefore we must select well which one we take. A processor, explained briefly and simply, is the part that is responsible for running the operating system and applications. The performance can vary quite depending on the model we take. In the chips of the processors we will always find two data: the speed and the number of cores.

The important thing when choosing a good processor is to know what use we are going to give it . If it is a low intensity use (surf the Internet, write documents) with an Atom or Core i3 processor we have enough. If we are going to use it for games, and more exhaustively, uploading to a Core i5 chip (or one of AMD’s most recent Ryzen 7) is a good option. Finally, if we are going to make a more professional or very specific use, we should choose a Core i7 with four cores.

SSD and hard disk

We continue with another fundamental factor: internal storage. This is where all the information on our computer is stored, including the operating system and its applications. In the case of traditional hard drives we should look at the writing speed. This data tells us, in revolutions per minute, the speed of rotation of the plates used to store the information. In principle with 5,400 RPM we have enough for everyday use but if we can get much better speed

Currently the hard drives are becoming somewhat outdated. The SSD technology , which stores information in very fast solid-state memory chips, offers a much higher speed and flashing access times without any noise. An operating system or a game installed on an SSD starts much faster than on a hard drive, to the point that simply changing this component an old computer can magically rejuvenate.

The biggest problem with SSDs is that they are a bit more expensive. The current recommendation is to use an SSD disk if you are not going to store much information and add a traditional high-capacity hard drive as a secondary unit for heavier data, such as large collections of music and movies. Most users have enough with a 256 GB SSD. A tip: if you take a hard drive with a lot of capacity, make two partitions to separate the files from the system of personal data such as photos and music. You will avoid more than one dislike.

Remember, you can always choose to use external units to dump information and take it with you anywhere. If you want more information about internal and external hard drives, in Tecnología de tu a tu we have a guide to help you in your choice .

RAM is a type of memory that the processor uses to temporarily dump calculations to run the applications. Over the years the quality has been improving a lot, and today it is easy to find RAM at a very affordable price. If we are going to use a computer for the basics, with 4 GB we have enough . The most demanding will get a good performance with 16 GB, and finally, for professional uses, the amount may vary depending on the task we are going to perform.

When it comes to expanding RAM , whether it’s a laptop or a desktop computer , we have to look carefully if we have free slots on the motherboard. Normally the table equipment comes with a free space to put more. In the case of laptops, it depends on the model. Always remember that the type of RAM memory must be the same as that accepted by the motherboard.

Graphic card

Graphic card

The graphic card is usually associated with games in a popular way. However, this is not entirely true. This element is responsible for processing all visual information produced in the CPU (ie the processor) and sending it to the monitor. In this way, choosing a convenient card is very important because it is who will show us what we will see on the screen.

Both Intel and AMD usually offer central processors with integrated cards that, for basic use, are more than sufficient. However, whenever we can (especially if we plan to play, watch video in high definition or work), we must opt for an independent graphics card. Both AMD and Nvidia have great models. Fix yourself well in the memory of each one. With 4 GB we will have enough, but 8 GB will guarantee a smoother operation during the next two years.

The base plates and the graphics card have a series of outputs, connectors, which allow us to connect different peripherals. From the basic ones like the keyboard, the mouse and the monitor to other more specific ones like the USB ports. When looking at which connectors our computer carries, we have to take into account what we are going to use and what our devices use. It is worthless to have a screen with HDMI input if our graphics card does not have it.

In terms of video output, today’s graphic cards in desktop computers have DisplayPort and HDMI outputs . The DVI format is in reverse. These connectors are capable of sending a high definition signal to a monitor. Most laptops have a DisplayPort output that we can use to connect another monitor or a projector, in case we have to make presentations in class or work.

The most modern and powerful computers, including the latest portable models from Apple but also many designed for games, integrate Thunderbolt technology into the USB-C port itself . This reduces the number of connectors and cables needed to connect the computer to an external display.

Some professional laptops and intended for the educational market still have VGA / D-sub outputs , since this connector is widely used in old projectors.

Types of computers

Surely in addition to terminology of the components, we have heard about different models of computers: laptops, desktops, hybrids … For some the difference may seem obvious, but for many other categories can be confusing. For this, we have prepared a section to explain to you what each one consists of.

Desktop computer

We start with the most basic model. The desktop of all life : a CPU or tower , a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. Each time they have been losing more prominence but if we are not going to move it every two times is the best option.

They are cheaper and we can update the pieces very easily and cheaply . Although laptops are attractive to work or have a fixed equipment at home is still the best option.

In recent years they have gained much prominence. Increasingly thinner and more powerful, laptops have become the choice for many users . Its main virtue: mobility. To be able to take the computer to any place without having to depend, in excess, of the plugs is a joy.

Normally the hardware is a bit more limited than that of desktop computers. Not that it is bad, on the contrary, but the fact of being mobile gives us some limitations : less powerful graphics cards, smaller hard drives … However, there are professional options and high performance games that can be compared without problems with a powerful desktop computer. Of course, they are considerably more expensive.

The times in which those who carry a laptop in the backpack was a punishment have gone down in history. Nowadays very extended, the Ultrabooks are portable very thin (less than 21 mm of thickness) and of low weight ( less than 2kg ). The idea is to offer power in a small space thanks to Intel processors. To achieve this reduction manufacturers use solid-state drives (SSD) with which, in addition to gaining space, make the operating system startup and data transfer much faster.

More and more manufacturers are betting on this format, and today companies like Acer or Asus have very interesting models. If you want more information about ultrabooks, here we explain in detail.

Is it a laptop or is it a tablet? They are both at the same time. Very versatile equipment that we can use either as computers or as tablets thanks to its touch screen. We can find two types of hybrids . On the one hand those in which you can rotate the screen (such as the Lenovo Yoga that you have above these lines) or those where we can separate keyboard and screen (like Surface ). They are one of the most trending options on the market and it is worth taking them into account.

All in one

Do you want a desktop computer but want it to be less bulky? Then an all in one is for you. Think of this type of computer as if it were a large screen with all the components hidden in its back. Simple but also powerful. Perfect to have them at home and enjoy a complete computer and design. We talked to you more about them here .

Tell me what you use and I’ll tell you what you need

We finish our guide with a section where, if you still have any doubt about what you need, give a hand when selecting a computer. Tell us what you are using and we will tell you what you need . Then, we leave you with a series of profiles that we hope will help you. If you miss one, do not hesitate to leave us a comment to help you in your choice.

I want a computer to surf the Internet, watch movies and read documents

In principle any computer fulfills that function but our recommendation is a laptop . If we are going to use it at home, we can take it with us to any room very easily. Taking into account that we are not going to give it a very intensive use, we should not worry too much about the hardware. With any Core i3 processor and 4 GB of RAM we have enough.

I want a computer to take to all sites

If what we are looking for is mobility and we want a computer for the most basic, our first option is a hybrid . Handy, versatile and ideal for carrying in any bag and backpack. If we want a little more power, Ultrabooks are just as light and small, in terms of thickness. If you are going to use it a lot and do not want to carry the charger, do not forget to take a spare battery, just in case. Many professional computers offer this option.

In Technology from you to you | Windows 10 on your convertible computer: everything it can do for you

I want a computer to play

The best option is a desktop computer. We must look very well in what processor it takes (from Intel i5 up is a good option), the RAM (8 GB to DDR3 is the minimum) and the graphics card. In this last section it is already a matter of taste. The options are basically two: AMD or Nvidia.

Both houses have very good models and it is difficult to choose one in particular. Our recommendation: have 8 GB of memory. Always avoid the cards integrated in the motherboard type Intel Graphics, do not give a performance good enough to play.

I want a computer to work as a designer / video editor

Again, the best option is a desktop computer, but for specific tasks, or if we have to move a lot, there are very powerful laptops that measure up. In any case, we must look at the processor, RAM (here the amount can vary greatly depending on what we are going to do) and the graphics card.

We are very interested in the power , some applications consume many resources, and also be able to display the graphics with speed and quality. Therefore, if we choose a desktop computer remember to buy a good monitor, as well as accessories that make your life easier. For example: a digital tablet.

How to save WhatsApp messages in Drive or your computer

Have you not saved the WhatsApp messages before they disappear?

The photos of the nephews who have sent us on WhatsApp are in danger. And those funny memes from the work group, too. As of November 12, they could disappear from your phone. The reason, a business decision made in Silicon Valley. But let’s not be alarmed. There is an easy and fast solution.

Save WhatsApp chats in Google Drive without size limit

Google and WhatsApp have signed an agreement so that the backup copies of messages, images and videos in Google Drive do not detract from the free 15 GB of each user’s account of a mobile phone with Android. Apple users will not be affected by this measure because their backups are stored in iCloud.

“WhatsApp backups that have not been updated for more than a year will be automatically removed from Google Drive,” Google warned. The technological giant advises to make a manual backup before that date to make sure that your messages are not as ephemeral as in Snapchat.

guardar WhatsApp

WhatsApp automatically makes a local copy (in the mobile memory) of the conversations every day at two in the morning. The daily copy is available for seven days in the folder sdcard / WhatsApp / Databases of the phone. But if we want to recover all our messages at any time, it is best to periodically save the messages in the cloud. Only then we will have the guarantee to recover them on your Android smartphone when we change terminals, reinstall WhatsApp or need to reset it to factory values.

Steps to back up in Google Drive

To save all our WhatsApp conversations in the cloud we have to access WhatsApp “Settings” from the menu located in the upper right corner, next to the searches.

  • We select “Chats”
  • Click on “Backup”
  • If we have already saved in Google Drive before, click on “Save”
  • If we have not linked our Google account to WhatsApp, we will “Add Account”
  • Once our Google Drive account appears, to schedule a periodic copy, we click on “Save in Google Drive” and select daily, weekly or monthly periodicity
  • If we prefer to make the copies manually, we choose “Only when I touch Save”

If we can not make a backup in Google Drive, we will check that our Google account is associated with your phone. We will also need to have installed the Google Play Services application, available for Android 2.3.4 and later operating systems.

How to correctly install the SSD hard disk on your computer

How to correctly install the SSD hard disk on your computer

Traditional hard drives or HDD (hard disk drive) have been with us for many years but, lately, another type of storage technology is winning the battle, solid state drives (SSD or solid state drive).

Today we have all heard about SSDs and their advantages over “traditional” hard drives : faster loading of applications and the operating system, less boot time and shutdown, and even better autonomy . We are going to see how to correctly change an HD disk for an SSD to give new life to our computer. But, first, let’s see its main differences.

Hard disk vs. SSD

The well-known hard drives are data storage devices that use a magnetic recording system to store files, composed of one or more plates (hard drives) .

The SSD disk, on the other hand, uses flash memory and does not carry mechanical parts but several chips, which has two basic advantages: faster access to data and greater resistance to shocks.

In terms of capabilities, the HDD has reached 2 TB, although the most widespread size is 500 MB. SSDs, on the other hand, tend to be somewhat more expensive (although their prices have dropped a lot), with 256 MB as the most used. However, the advantages noted above tip the balance to the SSD clearly .

Choosing the SSD disk

How to correctly install the SSD hard disk on your computer

The choice of what type of SSD depends on several points to consider: the type of computer where we will install it, capacity, computer connections, etc.

A disk for the laptop is not the same as for the desktop computer. In this second case we could install the SSD as a disk for the operating system and leave the old HDD as the second disk for data. Normally we will not have this option on a laptop (although there are models that do allow it).

On the other hand is the detail of the capacity: depending on the operating system, we might need more or less memory . For example, for a good use of Windows 10 we recommend a disk of 250 GB or more.

Finally we have to take into account if the disk that we are going to buy comes with a case to install it or we will have to buy an additional installation kit . As a general rule, all current SSDs come with this kit, although it does not hurt to make sure.

Installing the disk

We have already chosen the disk. If it does not come prepared, we’ll just have to mount it in the box that comes in the kit. Once ready, we will connect it to the computer and, depending on the use we are going to give it, we have two options:

  • If we use it as a single disk we will have to clone the old HDD disk if we want to keep everything as it was. For this, obviously, we will need an SSD of a capacity equal to or greater than the HDD that we are going to replace.
  • If we are going to use it as a secondary disk, we will only have to connect it and move the files.

SSD as a single disk

We connect the disk to the computer and use a program to clone the content , such as AOMEI Backupper , for example. It is simple and intuitive to use and will guide us step by step. There are many options such as Macrium Reflect Free or GParted , among others.

Once the process is over, which will last a long time depending on the size of the disk, we can proceed to the physical installation .

SSD hard disk as auxiliary or system disk

Some laptops come with two hard drives: one SSD for the operating system and another physical one for data and programs . We gain speed in the initial load and in the start of the computer. We can do the same, if our computer has a place for it, a desktop will not give us a problem because it usually has several bays for several discs.

In the case that we want to use the new SSD disk as a system disk , where we only install the OS of our computer, we will only have to connect it to it. Once our computer has recognized the disk and it works without problems (not yet formatted), we turn off the computer.

To install the operating system on the new disk , we must start the computer to recognize our original unit of that program (either on CD or USB) and follow the instructions.

Then we would proceed to the installation of the operating system as we have said before.

Once all the software is correctly installed, we will check the huge difference in performance and speed with the previous physical disk (which, by the way, we can continue to use as an external disk just by buying a box ).

The ideal is to use the SSD for the programs that we will use the most and the most quickly, the operating system, games, etc. We will give new life to our computer in a simple and economical way.

What is Intel Optane and how will it improve the speed of my computer?

Image result for fast running computer

There is no doubt that the SSD units have been a complete computer revolution, perhaps the largest since the arrival of 3D graphics cards. Even the oldest computer seems to fly when it receives one, but they are not without problems. From the start, they are quite expensive if we look at the € / GB ratio. Much more than the very slow conventional hard drives, very cheap and high capacity, but with very low performance.

An intermediate option is the hybrid hard drives , which have not enjoyed great popularity. And between one and the other comes a new technology: Optane. This is the name given to XPoint 3D memory units developed by Intel, which basically put the turbo so that a computer with a classic hard drive sometimes runs as if it had an SSD. It sounds impossible, but it is not.

How does Optane work?

Intel Optane

The Optane units make use of a special type of memory developed by Intel and chip manufacturer Micron. It receives the name 3D Xpoint and combines broadly the very small latency of RAM with the persistence (ability to store information after turning off the PC) of an SSD. Put another way, try to imagine something like a tiny hard drive that can access the files inside it as quickly as if they were already housed in RAM.

Optane units, in fact, can be used as if they were huge banks of RAM with persistence in professional systems. For the consumer, which is more interesting to us, they speed up the operation of hard disks by creating a high-speed buffer. They have much less capacity than an SSD , but that’s because the bulk of the files are stored on the hard drive.

The idea is that the documents and files of most frequent use are stored in the Optane unit , much faster than a normal hard disk, so that the computer goes to it and only “calls” the hard disk when it needs to access data outside of this unit.

Intel resembles the operation of a PC with a conventional hard drive to that of a kitchen with the pantry in another room. Every time the computer needs an ingredient to prepare a recipe, it has to leave the kitchen to pick it up. Optane memory acts like a conveyor belt that brings the ingredients to the computer at full speed so you do not waste time going in and out.

The benefits of an SSD without having an SSD

While there were already similar solutions using pendrives and cache spaces on the hard drive itself, none of them offers the speed of Xpoint 3D memory. In addition, its latency is incredibly low, so it allows to maintain a constant flow of files very, very fast even if the transfer speed of an Optane unit is not greater than that of an SSD in nominal terms.

The interesting thing about Optane units is that they are much cheaper than a high performance SSD but they offer some of its advantages. The fact is that most of the files consulted by the user and by Windows are usually almost the same, so by simply moving them to an Optane unit we are already getting part of the benefits of having an SSD.

One point in favor of Optane units is, as we said, their latency. The time it takes an SSD drive to access a file is measured in microseconds, while in an Optane it is nanosecond. This allows you to send relatively small files at enormous speed and very consistently.

In addition to all this, the Optane units are economical. Because they are basically very small. Currently they are offered in modules of 16 and 32 GB, which may seem very small, but they are enough for the PC to host the files and frequently used applications. With only a fraction of the capacity of an SSD disk, it already speeds up access to data that would otherwise have to be read from a large but very slow hard drive.

Why can Optane be a convenient option?

The characteristics of Optane are quite unique. They are units too small to store large applications exclusively inside and essentially serve as a complement to the hard drive. So they are not comparable to an SSD. However, they can be interesting for users who need to store large amounts of data but only regularly access a few.

Intel, in fact, has launched the first Optans thinking a lot about the players . Many of them have huge amounts of games, so an SSD is very short and they use hard drives of 3 TB and more. The result is very slow loading times. By adding an Optane unit you can accelerate access to the load data without installing an expensive SSD.

The low latency of Optane units can also be very useful for people who work with large databases at a professional level. And above all, for all that domestic user with a computer equipped with a conventional hard drive and who does not want to add another unit , since Optane memories are “invisible” facing the desktop. They just accelerate the system and do not come into view.

As a general recommendation, a 16 GB module should be sufficient for the average user who wants to accelerate their hard drive without changing it for an SSD. Those of 32 GB are reserved for high performance teams and very demanding players.

How can I install an Optane unit on my computer?

Not all computers can benefit from the possibilities of Optane units. Only those computers equipped with an Intel Core i3 or higher seventh generation or more modern processor can use them, assuming they have an M.2 slot. It is also necessary to use Windows 10.

To install an Optane memory you just have to insert it into the corresponding slot and start the PC. Depending on the age of the equipment it may be necessary to update the motherboard. Once Windows is booted, the system will detect its presence and you can proceed to activate the hardware. The new drive will not be visible on your PC, so it’s not like you’re installing a new hard drive or an SSD.

Some equipment with Intel Optane as standard

Given their characteristics, many computer manufacturers use Optane units as a complement to a high-capacity hard disk in both general-purpose and gaming equipment . This ensures optimal performance and ample space for games while maintaining a more adjusted and attractive price. And we do not only talk about desktop towers, but also laptops.

Is the open source voting machine really a solution?

Image result for voting

This is the last article of Tristan Nitot who challenged me with this idea of open source voting machine. Here is the excerpt of his article where it is question:

Bruce Schneier explains that the transparency provided by the fact that the source code is public is essential in this environment. There are other examples, such as the famous voting machines, the black boxes of democracy ( Ireland has just scrapped its own, for lack of reliability), or the cookies announced in the framework of the Hadopi law , which can lead to the shutdown of Internet access. As Bruce Schneier explains, from the moment the issue is important (elections, court decisions), we must be sure that the software that helps decision-making is transparent, and that we can compile it. – even to be sure that the source code we are analyzing is the one we are executing. This implies in essence that the software in question is free.

Is an open source voting machine the guarantor of the transparency of the vote? Let’s study the question a little bit.

If the code is open, it is easy to make sure that it is doing what it is supposed to do. This is a positive point. Now this code will be installed in a voting machine. It is also necessary that the design of this voting machine is open.

We must go one step further in the definition of the voting machine. It must use free software and its hardware design must be open. By this statement we are already beginning to touch the limits . But however, it exists, there is for example the OpenRISC 1000 a processor with free specifications.

We can therefore obtain a voting machine whose software and hardware specifications are free.

How are we going to guarantee that the voting machines built according to these specifications will comply with them? Who will be responsible for this certification? Then admitting that this point is also raised, it will be necessary to ensure that the machine delivered to the voting point is the one that has been checked and that it has not undergone any alteration.

Then comes the moment to enter the machine to vote the data about the voting point: the list of voters, candidates. It will be necessary to find a solution so that this operation does not allow to introduce falsified data or any other program likely to modify the official program.

All this seems very complicated to replace a simple urn and avoid the chore of stripping. This manual procedure is not flawless either. But his control is accessible to anyone and not just computer scientists.

Richard Stallman had declared himself opposed to the principle of voting machines, whether free or not:

Democracy is too important to take preventable risks. If a digital voice counting system seems sound, it would take twenty years of experience to trust it.

All this to show that in this case , the transparency of open source does not necessarily solve all the problems. Of course it looks better than a proprietary voting machine. But in this case it only changes little in the end. The question is rather: do we really need a voting machine?
